Városmajori Jézus Szíve plébániatemplom
Városmajori Jézus Szíve parish church stands in Budapest as a modern ensemble of concrete, stone and light. The small chapel came first in 1923, while the main church followed in 1933, with sweeping concrete arcades linking the buildings and a separate bell tower.
Aladár and Bertalan Árkay shaped the architecture, whose flat roofs and crisp lines frame a rich interior. Eight side chapels hold individual symbols and artworks, while Aba-Novák Vilmos’s colourful frescoes cover the coffered ceiling with scenes of Creation, saints, prophets and angels. Five tall stained-glass windows by Árkayné Sztehlo Lili illuminate the sanctuary with scenes from Christ’s life.
Reliefs by Ohmann Béla place angels above the entrance, and statues of Saint Thérèse, Saint Anthony and Saint Rita continue through the chapel corridors. The detached bell tower stands apart because an underground stream runs beneath the site. Outside, a Madonna marks the place where a bomb struck in 1942.
