Kabarett-Theater Distel

The Kabarett-Theater Distel is Germany’s largest ensemble cabaret, housed in the Admiralspalast in Berlin-Mitte. Wheelchair access makes the theatre available to visitors with mobility needs. Political and social subjects take shape through sketches, parodies, monologues, and live music. Open rehearsals, guest performances, and improvisational theatre broaden the programme.

Founded in 1953 in East Berlin, the theatre emerged as a counterweight to West Berlin’s cabaret scene. It became a voice for East Berliners. Satire examined politics on both sides, including socialism in the GDR, while directors and performers worked under official pressure. After the Berlin Wall rose, that balance drew criticism. In the 1970s, a second venue answered strong demand, and reunification later brought another political shift. The theatre now operates without state subsidies, preserving its independence.
