Deutsches Theater
In Berlin, Germany, Deutsches Theater presents a classical façade and two adjoining stages beneath one theatrical address. Its original construction dates back to the year 1850. Adolf L'Arronge founded the theatre in 1883, pursuing a high-quality ensemble repertory company. The model drew on German court theatre, especially the Meiningen Ensemble.
That influence valued historically accurate sets and costumes, vivid crowd scenes, and meticulous directorial control. Otto Brahm took charge of the theatre in 1894. Brahm brought classical productions and new realistic playwrights to the stage, advancing theatrical Naturalism. Max Reinhardt succeeded him in the year 1904. During his leadership, he founded a theatre school and built a chamber theatre in 1905. His tenure ended when he fled Nazi Germany in 1933.
