Asisi Panorama Berlin Die Mauer stands at former Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, presenting a panoramic view of divided Berlin during the 1980s. Yadegar Asisi’s artwork rises fifteen metres high and extends sixty metres around you, while a four-metre platform overlooks scenes from everyday life beside the Berlin Wall.
Kreuzberg appears with punks, squats and a petting zoo beside the Landwehr Canal, separated from West Berlin by the wall. Across the border, grey East Berlin buildings stand behind the death strip, border installations and watchtowers where DDR guards watched the activity nearby. Private photographs and film excerpts add personal views of Berliners living with that division.
The panorama holds the contrast between West Berlin’s alternative culture and East Berlin’s subdued streets in one surrounding scene. Look closely at the watchtowers facing Kreuzberg, only metres from the lively neighbourhood beyond the border.
