Muzeu Arkeologjik Durrës

Muzeu Arkeologjik Durrës stands near Albania’s shoreline and preserves archaeological finds from ancient Dyrrhachium. The museum presents material from Ancient Greek, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. Its collection includes Roman funerary stelae, stone sarcophagi, and miniature busts of Venus. These objects reveal religious practices in ancient Durrës. Byzantine walls rise immediately north of the museum and add another layer to the city’s history. Their stonework connects the museum with Durrës’s changing urban landscape. The building suffered damage and looting during unrest, but later restoration returned the museum to use. Its displays connect trade, religion, art, and everyday life across several millennia of Adriatic history. The Albanian Institute of Archaeology and the Academy of Sciences support the museum’s scholarly work. Wheelchair accessibility adds a practical feature to this historic site beside the coast. The planned collection also includes medieval material and discoveries from underwater archaeology in the Bay of Durrës. Together, the museum and nearby walls show how ancient, Byzantine, and later histories overlap in Durrës.
