Pastor del flabiol
Pastor del flabiol stands in Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona, among fountains, greenery, shops, cafés, and busy transport routes. Pau Gargallo’s bronze shepherd plays a flabiol, a traditional Catalan flute, while holding a lamb beside a sheep.
Created in 1928 for Barcelona’s 1929 World Exhibition, the sculpture follows Noucentisme’s calm, classicist approach. Smooth modelling, still posture, and clearly defined forms give the three-metre figure a quiet presence. The original suffered damage and now rests at the Pau Gargallo Museum in Zaragoza, while this bronze copy arrived in 1995. An inscription links the monument to Emili Mira, a psychiatrist and early professor of psychiatry at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Two cypress trees frame the shepherd, adding a natural border within the open square. Eight of the original sixteen exhibition sculptures remain displayed around this central meeting place.
