Palau Baró de Castellet

Palau Baró de Castellet stands on Barcelona’s Carrer Montcada, a narrow historic street lined with medieval, Renaissance and Baroque palaces. Stone walls surround a central courtyard and a staircase rising to the main floor. Carrer Montcada traces its origins to the twelfth century, when the Montcada barons received land from Catalan count kings. Noble and merchant families later built homes here.

Today, connected palaces house the Museu Picasso, combining historic architecture with galleries devoted to Pablo Picasso’s work. The museum opened in the early 1960s as the first museum dedicated to Picasso and the only one founded during his lifetime. Jaume Sabartés provided the founding collection. Picasso supported Barcelona as its setting after spending much of his youth in the city. The galleries hold academic studies, Blue and Rose Period paintings, ceramics, sculptures, and Cubist works. First Communion dates from 1896. Science and Charity followed in 1897, while another sequence reworks Velázquez’s Las Meninas.

Careful restoration connects the buildings while preserving Barcelona’s medieval architectural character. Original courtyards, vaulted ceilings, and stone staircases remain visible. Those surviving details place Picasso’s paintings inside the stone fabric of historic Carrer Montcada.
