La Torre del Fang

La Torre del Fang stands in Barcelona as a medieval farmhouse linked to the former rural landscape of Sant Martí de Provençals. Its earliest stone structure dates from the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. Near the Rec Comtal canal, the building supported agricultural life before Barcelona’s expanding streets and railways transformed its surroundings.

A fifteenth-century addition used masonry bound with clay mortar, creating an L-shaped plan beneath a four-sided roof. Later sections formed an open courtyard on the eastern side. The property belonged to families including the merchant and banker Galceran de Gualbes, then passed to the church and religious orders.

The surviving architecture combines two-storey stone walls, an eleven-arched southern gallery and traditional Arab-tiled roofs. Three Gothic windows display delicate stonework, while two feature lobed tracery and carved human heads at their imposts. During Barcelona’s siege in 1713 and 1714, Bourbon troops used the farmhouse as a base for bombarding the city.
