Castell de Montjuïc

Castell de Montjuïc is a military fortress on Montjuïc hill, overlooking Barcelona and the port from an elevated position. Its origins reach back to the conflict of 1640. Its bastions, battlements, watchtower, and later fortifications reflect centuries of military construction and changing political power. The castle also carries a difficult memory of repression and imprisonment. It served as a defensive stronghold, a prison, and a military museum before becoming a municipal facility. Lluís Companys was executed here in 1940 after the Spanish Civil War. The site now supports public cultural activity. L’Espai de la Memòria and the Centre d’Interpretació de la Muntanya de Montjuïc connect the castle with remembrance and the mountain’s history. Temporary exhibitions and guided tours add further context. From the castle grounds, panoramic views extend across Barcelona, while the structure shows how a military site became a public space.
