Casa Tosquella

Casa Tosquella stands in Barcelona as a modernist house where craft, garden, and urban history meet. Joan Caballé designed the original summer residence for Antoni Tosquella in 1889. Eduard Maria Balcells later reshaped the house, giving its facade an eclectic Arts and Crafts character. Arabesque horseshoe arches meet curved modernist lines across the square tower. Wrought-iron railings, glazed ceramic tiles, and sgraffito carry plant and animal motifs around the property. Peacock-tail stained glass links the interior rooms with the garden.

Inside, Nolla mosaic floors, fir-wood doors, decorated ceilings, and leaded glass continue the ornamental design. The garden includes paving, planters, trees, plants, and a small auxiliary building. Barcelona’s preservation of Casa Tosquella reflects its role in the city’s architectural and social history. The house survived demolition pressure and belongs to the city, which plans a senior civic centre. Its national-interest cultural listing recognises the building and garden as a connected heritage ensemble.
