Casa Comalat

Casa Comalat stands on Barcelona’s Avinguda Diagonal as a Modernisme building designed by Salvador Valeri i Pupurull. Built between 1909 and 1911, it draws on Antoni Gaudí’s organic forms, with curved lines linking its windows, balconies, and doors.

The quartz sandstone façade from Montjuïc carries dense ornament, a central bay window, and a turret roof covered in green glazed tiles. Two dragons face reclining allegorical figures along the cornice, while a dove with an olive branch crowns the central composition. Around the corner on Carrer de Còrsega, wooden glazed galleries, colourful trencadís mosaics, rolling blinds, and parabolic portals create a more open façade. Lluís Bru i Salelles made the ceramic mosaics, which climb towards the curved upper edge.

Inside, white marble, West Indian mahogany, gilded stucco, fresco medallions, and stained glass fill the entrance hall and staircase with a total-work-of-art effect. Antoni Rigalt i Blanch’s workshop produced glasswork for the lift doors, salons, smoking room, and dining room. The interior now serves as offices and is closed to visitors, but the façades remain visible from the street.
