Zocherstraat 23-25
Zocherstraat 23-25 stands beside Amsterdam’s Vondelpark, where a narrow façade follows a bend in the street. Built in 1916, the former school hides spacious interiors behind its modest entrance.
Architect Gerrit Jan Rutgers designed the building for the city’s public works department and its original sixteen classrooms. Art Nouveau details, stained-glass windows, ceilings above four metres, and façade decorations by Hildo Krop preserve its educational character. The Fifth Higher Civic School later tested the HAVO curriculum here in 1964, before the former school became a municipal monument. Between 2013 and 2018, the building became Klein Vondelpark, with twelve apartments and eight two-storey garden villas across about 4,500 square metres.
The entrance hall still recalls a school corridor, while gardens, balconies, and rooftop terraces now occupy spaces shaped by the building’s new residential life.
