Sint Nicolaaskerk
Sint Nicolaaskerk rises in Amsterdam’s old centre, close to the central railway station and the city’s historic skyline. Adrianus Bleijs completed this Roman Catholic church in 1887, combining Neo-Baroque and neo-Renaissance forms.
Two towers frame the main façade, with a rose window between them and Saint Nicholas above the gable. An octagonal crossing tower carries a Baroque dome, lantern and cross, while the interior follows a three-aisled cross-basilica plan. Religious murals, two side chapels and four tiers of stained glass surround the richly decorated dome.
Look beneath the rose window for Wilhelm Sauer’s 1889 organ, his only major work in the Netherlands that remains in its original state. The basilica received a rib relic of Saint Nicholas from Egmond Abbey in December 2021, after the relic had rested there since 1087.
