Schloss Bullachberg

Schloss Bullachberg rises on the rounded Bullachberg hill in Alterschrofen, between Schwangau and Hohenschwangau. The Lech glacier shaped this rock formation during the last Ice Age, and the surrounding plain looks towards the Bavarian Alps and nearby royal castles.

The present country house was built in 1907 for Munich businessman Emil Papenhagen, with Eugen Drollinger as architect. Its Jugendstil design forms an almost square block with a steep hipped roof, a west wing, and a round northwest tower. Nineteen rooms occupy six levels across 1,300 square metres, including a chapel in the west annex and a balcony carried by pillars on the southern façade. The estate later housed a family residence, an organic farm, holiday apartments, guest rooms, cultural events, and a golf academy.

A stepped gable marks the main façade, while an octagonal tower rises at the southeast corner. A bay window with an octagonal spire shapes the east side, and a three-part studio window overlooks the northern kitchen terrace. The privately owned property is not open to the public.
