De Val van Icarus stands on a green hill near Theater De Spiegel in Zwolle, surrounded by an urban park setting. Fons Bemelmans shaped the bronze figure around 1979. Icarus appears inside a large disc, suggesting the sun that caused his downfall in Greek mythology. A smaller version shows Icarus without the disc.

The sculpture first stood on Zwolle’s Grote Markt during the early 1980s, where it remained for about twenty-five years. Müll and market stalls gradually obscured the artwork there. In 2006, Zwolle placed the bronze work in storage, then moved it to a flower garden in Park de Wezenlanden in 2008. After an attempted theft in 2012, another move brought the sculpture to its present hill near Theater De Spiegel in April 2014.

The circular form keeps the myth visible: ambition carries Icarus towards the sun, while the bronze body records a long life in public space.
