Villa Patumbah in Zurich was built between 1883 and 1885 by architects Chiodera and Tschudy. Karl Fürchtegott Grob commissioned the Zurich villa for himself.

Its Neo-Renaissance façade combines a rusticated base, painted mineral decoration, and marble from Verona and Carrara. Mercury and Flora stand in niches beside the eastern balcony. Inside, Renaissance, Gothic, and Rococo rooms surround a hall crowned by a colourful glass dome. Chinese-style ink drawings cover doors around the gallery. The connected coach house uses Swiss wooden construction and carries motifs of horses, riders, and a butterfly on its iron gate.

The surrounding Zurich park follows English landscape design. Evariste Mertens shaped its lawns, flower beds, water features, tree groups, and garden pavilion. Villa Patumbah’s history also reflects wealth from a tobacco plantation in Sumatra and harsh conditions for plantation workers. The Swiss Heritage Center occupies the protected villa. Its ground floor presents a permanent exhibition on building culture, while upper floors house Swiss Heritage Society offices. Villa Patumbah’s park is accessible to the public.
