Villa Hohenbühl rises above the railway tracks near Zurich’s Stadelhofen station as a prominent piece of city architecture. Alfred Friedrich Bluntschli designed the villa for Friedrich Wegmann Schoch, a miller and inventor. The architect gave it a Neo-Renaissance style inspired by Italian villas and their formal proportions. A large dome crowns the villa’s grand columned entrance. Its façade presents a base, main floor and attic floor, while preserved interiors retain rich decoration. The terraced park climbs a steep hillside above Zurich. Evariste Mertens developed the planting, following Bluntschli’s basic garden design across the steep slope. Quince groves frame a hay meadow in the park. From there, the south façade comes into view, while a restored wall grotto stands along Kreuzbühlstrasse. Small garden houses and a winter garden complete the grounds. The city of Zurich acquired the property, which later served a girls’ school and Kantonsschule Stadelhofen. Administrative offices became another use for the building. Conservation retained original paintings, finishes and structure, while reversible technical installations support changing needs without permanent alterations. The villa and park are protected heritage assets in Zurich. Villa Hohenbühl is recognised as a Swiss cultural property of national significance, linking architectural detail with civic heritage.
