Sechseläutenplatz is Zurich’s largest public square, set beside Lake Zurich near the Limmat and Schanzengraben. The Opera House and Bernhardtheater border its southern edge.

To the west, the Utoquai promenade meets the square, while Stadelhoferplatz lies across Theaterstrasse to the east. Bellevueplatz continues the open space towards Zurich’s tram network.

Beneath the Vals quartzite surface, excavations uncovered remains from Kleiner Hafner, a prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement. A lakeside pavilion presents the archaeological findings from Kleiner Hafner.

These remains belong to the UNESCO World Heritage property Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps and reveal early lakeside settlement. The square also recalls Zurich’s military harbour.

Later uses included the Kornhaus restaurant, Tonhalle orchestra, a meadow, and a surface car park before redevelopment. A programmable fountain animates the stone plaza.

Water rises through adjustable nozzles, receives LED lighting at night, and returns through a filtration and reuse system. Two pavilions add a café and exhibition space.

Sechseläutenplatz accommodates the Sechseläuten festival and other public gatherings beside Zurich’s cultural landmarks. Circus Knie and the Zurich Film Festival also use the square.

Its stone surface includes tent anchorages and a firebrick shell that protects the paving during the Böögg burning. Red oaks and tulip trees complete the redesigned urban setting.
