Münsterhof is Zurich’s largest old-town square, standing before Fraumünster in the Lindenhof quarter. Medieval buildings and guild houses surround the square. Its position places the square beside Münsterbrücke, the Limmat, Limmatquai, and Grossmünster across the river. Fraumünster provides Münsterhof with a strong architectural backdrop.

Archaeological evidence links the site with Roman buildings, a nearby harbour, graves, and a later cemetery. The square carries traces of Roman Turicum in its history. In the Middle Ages, the enclosed city had one main square here for markets, ceremonies, political gatherings, and performances. Later markets even included pigs after the Reformation.

Monuments recall Hans Waldmann and Katharina von Zimmern, while the cloister contains Paul Bodmer’s frescoes. Katharina’s memorial uses copper blocks to form an altar-like sculpture. A central fountain, patterned granite paving, benches, and lighting shape the renovated public space. Münsterhof gives pedestrians room beside cafés and restaurants. Finds from excavations appear in the Fraumünster crypt, adding material evidence to the square’s layered past. The square remains a place of urban life.
