Sankt Stephan stands in Würzburg as a Protestant church with roots in a Benedictine monastery. Its documented story begins around 1014, with a collegiate church dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Adalbero transformed it into a Benedictine monastery in 1057. After secularization dissolved the monastery in 1803, Sankt Stephan became Würzburg’s first Protestant parish church. The present church reflects later rebuilding after an eighteenth-century redesign and wartime destruction. Johann Philipp Geigel shaped its neoclassical form in 1788 and 1789. Bombing destroyed the building in March 1945. Between 1949 and 1955, reconstruction restored the exterior, crypt, Michaelskapelle, stucco columns, and choir stalls. Since 1952, Sankt Stephan has served as Würzburg’s Protestant deanery church. Inside, Helmut Ammann’s crucifixion group has formed the chancel’s centre since 1954. The organ combines Friedrich Weigle’s work with later additions by Richard Rensch. In 2021, a celesta joined its three manuals, pedalboard, 52 stops, and more than 3,400 pipes. Together, the architecture, bells, organ, and former monastery setting connect Sankt Stephan with Würzburg’s religious history.
