Marienkapelle stands beside Würzburg’s market square as a Roman Catholic Gothic chapel with the scale of a church. Its three aisles, five bays and octagonal pillars create a tall interior, with the central nave rising more than 21 metres. Three portals bring the architecture into view: the southern Brautpforte shows the Coronation of the Virgin, while the western Goldene Pforte presents the Last Judgment.

Construction began under Bishop Gerhard von Schwarzburg in 1377, after a synagogue on the site was destroyed during the 1349 pogrom. The choir was consecrated in 1392, the building was largely complete by 1441, and the tower roof followed in 1479. Tilman Riemenschneider’s workshop supplied Apostle figures and Adam and Eve sculptures, whose originals now stand in a museum. Fire destroyed the roof and interior during the bombing of March 1945, and rebuilding continued from 1948 until the chapel’s re-consecration in 1962.

A gilded copper Madonna rises 72 metres above the square, holding its place in Würzburg’s skyline. The figure, including the globe beneath her feet, stands nearly six metres high and weighs about 1,200 kilograms. Inside, tombs include Konrad von Schaumburg’s monument and a bronze plaque marking architect Balthasar Neumann’s unmarked burial.
