Falkenhaus stands on Würzburg’s central market square, beside the Marienkapelle and opposite the Kaufhof department store. Three storeys and three curved gables shape its Rococo façade, while elaborate stucco makes it one of southern Germany’s notable historic fronts.

The site first held the Hof zur Burgpfarre, residence of Würzburg’s cathedral priest from 1338. Innkeeper Franz Thomas Meißner bought the house in 1735, and his widow Barbara commissioned the Rococo redesign in 1751 from travelling stucco artists from Upper Bavaria. Until the nineteenth century, the building contained Würzburg’s only concert and dance hall, before accommodating a bank, textile shop and printing company. An air raid on 16 March 1945 burned it out and brought parts of the façade down. Würzburg rebuilt the exterior in the early 1950s from old photographs, while adapting the interior for modern use.

Since 1952, the building has housed Würzburg’s tourist information centre and main city library. A renovation in the 1990s expanded the library, and the protected monument remains wheelchair accessible. The three-gabled façade preserves the clearest trace of its long passage from priest’s residence to social venue and civic building.
