Denghoog is a Neolithic passage grave on the northern edge of Wenningstedt, on Germany’s island of Sylt. An artificial mound rises three and a half metres above the ground. Its base measures thirty-two metres across, while an ellipsoid chamber beneath it measures roughly five by three metres. Twelve massive glacial erratics support the roof.

The stones travelled from Scandinavia during the Ice Age. Dry-stone walls, blue clay and stone fragments make the chamber almost waterproof. A narrow passage leads inside, measuring six metres long and only one metre high. The monument dates to around 3000 BC and served as a burial place across several generations.

Professor Ferdinand Wibel first excavated the site in 1868, uncovering pottery, stone tools and human remains. Further excavation in 1982 revealed additional details about its construction and use. Today, the preserved mound offers a close look at prehistoric building methods and burial practices on Sylt. Twelve boulders still carry the chamber’s roof beneath the grassy hill.
