Steinkreuze are small, simple stone crosses found beside paths and in quiet spots in Germany. Their low forms mark places where people remembered deaths, boundaries, or other significant events. The plain shapes belong to the regional tradition of Sühnekreuze, which joined remembrance with the landscape.

Some surfaces carry carved symbols or weapons, giving physical clues to the event commemorated there. In Catholic regions, passersby paused beside them to pray for people who died without last rites. The Reformation weakened that ritual setting, while the Carolina and state courts replaced private atonement agreements. From about 1532 onward, people largely stopped erecting new Sühnekreuze across the region.

Today, weathered stone, shallow grooves, and patches of moss preserve traces of older beliefs and losses. Look closely at each face: a worn incision or moss-filled hollow connects the path with a human story.
