Wien Museum Karlsplatz stands at Vienna’s Karlsplatz, presenting the city’s history and art in a restrained modern building. Oswald Haerdtl designed its understated architecture. A covered courtyard now forms the Great Hall, where the largest objects in the collection are displayed.

The permanent exhibition traces Vienna from the Neolithic period through the Roman camp of Vindobona and into the present. Works by Gustav Klimt highlight its nineteenth-century focus. Special exhibitions occupy the top floor, while another new level adds a café, terrace, event hall, and education centre. Those additions followed the building’s redesign between 2020 and 2023.

The museum’s roots reach back to the late nineteenth century, when it was known as the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna. Otto Wagner once prepared designs for a dedicated building. After opening in 1959, the museum became a place for exhibitions on architecture, music, coffeehouse culture, and social history. Wheelchair access makes the galleries easier to explore.
