Stephansdom is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Vienna and the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vienna. The Archbishop of Vienna has his seat here.

The present limestone building combines Romanesque and Gothic features, with major construction beginning under Duke Rudolf IV in the fourteenth century. Two earlier churches occupied this site before the present cathedral. Archaeological excavations identified a cemetery from Roman times beneath the cathedral grounds, extending the site's religious history. The first church was consecrated in 1147.

The cathedral reaches 136 metres at its highest point, while the south tower dominates Vienna's skyline. The north tower is shorter and carries a Renaissance cap. The limestone exterior measures 107 metres in length and 40 metres in width. The roof carries 230,000 glazed tiles across its steep surface. The tiles form mosaics of the double-headed eagle and the arms of Vienna and the Republic of Austria. Stephansdom contains twenty-two bells, including the Pummerin in the north tower. The south tower holds eleven electrically operated bells for Mass, while the Roman Towers contain bells for evening prayers and funerals. Fire during the Second World War destroyed the roof, but protective measures saved many artworks. The reconstruction led to full reopening in 1952.
