The Reiterstandbild Erzherzog Albrecht is a bronze equestrian monument before Vienna’s Palais Erzherzog Albrecht, now the Albertina. The statue stands above the street on the Augustinerbastei. Caspar von Zumbusch created the figure, while Carl König designed its substantial architectural base. Czech granite forms the monument’s oval stone pedestal. Bronze oak leaves, scroll cartouches and inscription panels organise the base beneath the mounted archduke. Shield-bearing angels also decorate the monument’s architectural base. The memorial honours Albrecht, a field marshal who led the South Army to victory at Custozza. He later served as general inspector of the army. The palace behind him housed the art collection that became known as the Albertina after the monarchy. The horseman faces the Vienna State Opera. Together, statue, palace and surviving fortifications create a visible link between imperial power, military memory and Vienna’s art world. This historic spot is wheelchair accessible for visitors. Its position on the former Augustinerbastei keeps Vienna’s defensive edge present beside the Albertina’s cultural setting.
