Laubreise is an outdoor art installation by Austrian artist Lois Weinberger at Vienna’s Erste Campus. The installation stands outdoors beside the Canettistraße entrance at Erste Campus. Created in 2016, the work places a wooden hut within an area surrounded by Vienna’s established gardens and urban green spaces. The hut resembles a rural farm shed in form. Inside, a cuboid wire mesh structure receives leaves, twigs, and grass clippings from the campus grounds. These materials slowly compost inside the mesh. After decomposition, parts of the roof are removed, exposing the resulting soil to natural growth. Wild plants can then grow freely around the hut. That change makes Laubreise a living process rather than a fixed object, shaped by decay, soil, and vegetation. The wild vegetation directs the installation’s later form. Weinberger described this approach as a secular garden, where growth and decomposition unfold within a busy city. The plants become part of the artwork. At Laubreise, you can observe how cultural construction and natural change meet through leaves, wire, timber, and soil. Vienna’s public landscape frames this ongoing artistic transformation.
