Erzherzog-Karl-Denkmal stands on Vienna’s Heldenplatz as an equestrian monument to Archduke Charles. Anton Dominik von Fernkorn created the bronze statue, unveiled in 1860, showing the commander on a horse balanced on its rearing hind legs. The surrounding square occupies former Hofburg grounds, once used as a bastion garden and public promenade.

An octagonal stone pedestal supports the sculpture and carries plaques, bronze fittings, imperial emblems, coats of arms, the double-headed eagle, and battle names. Eduard van der Nüll designed these architectural elements, while Theodor von Karajan wrote the inscriptions and Grillparzer approved their final wording. The memorial recalls Charles’s victory over Napoleon at Aspern in 1809, and its unveiling followed plans for the battle’s fiftieth anniversary.

The second equestrian statue on Heldenplatz honours Prince Eugene of Savoy, giving the square its name. Fernkorn’s earlier bronze model from 1847 remains at Schloss Dobersberg in Lower Austria.
