Bezirksmuseum Hietzing traces the history of Vienna’s thirteenth district inside a former school building in historicist style. Its basement and ground floor preserve architectural elements dating from before 1680, giving the visit a tangible sense of layers.

Charred bone remains from around 20,000 BC mark some of Vienna’s earliest human settlement, while Neolithic stone slabs show how early communities milled grain. Later displays follow the Godtinesfeld donation, the vanished settlement of St. Nikolai, and Hietzing’s transformation into a villa quarter. Bertha von Suttner’s typewriter, Egon Schiele’s easel and sole sculpture, and Friedrich Julius Bieber’s study connect local history with notable residents.

Habsburg memorabilia reflects Schönbrunn’s presence, while exhibits on the Werkbundsiedlung, clubs and social life reveal how the district developed beyond imperial associations. Special exhibitions, lectures, concerts, book presentations and family readings extend the programme, with much of the museum’s work carried out by volunteers. One striking object is a model of a radium cannon built for Lainz Hospital.
