Forte Santa Caterina stands on Verona’s southern side, near the Adige’s right bank and the San Pancrazio river bend. From its ridge, you can see other forts, Verona’s walls, and hill fortifications beyond the river. Built between 1850 and 1852, the fortress formed the eastern end of Verona’s first entrenched field. Originally known as Werk Hess, it served as a self-sufficient stronghold overlooking the Santa Caterina ridge.

Franz von Scholl’s plan called for three forts, while Johann von Hlavaty later designed one larger, more economical structure. Major Conrad Petrasch supervised construction between 1850 and 1852. The polygonal layout combined central and rear redoubts, diverging flanks, rounded shoulders, and four sectors divided by dry moats. Four arched portals with drawbridges led into the fortified interior.

Military training, an ammunition explosion, abandonment, and a motocross track caused the loss of several sections. Restoration and maintenance made the surviving spaces accessible for cultural and leisure activities. High retaining walls, earth-covered roofs, wells, and traditional stonework still reveal its defensive design. The original armament included twenty-nine smoothbore cannons, two rifled cannons, and two twenty-four-centimetre mortars.
