Cattedrale di Santa Maria Matricolare rises in Verona as a Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its Romanesque façade combines a pediment, Gothic windows, and a seventeenth-century Baroque upper section. Two griffins support the twelfth-century porch, where sculptures surround the Virgin and Child above the entrance.

An earthquake destroyed two earlier churches here in 1117, prompting construction of the present building in Romanesque form. Consecrated in 1187, the cathedral retains its original plan despite later renovations and additions. Inside, red Verona marble pilasters divide the nave from two aisles beneath Gothic arcades. Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin, painted in 1535, remains the only work by the artist in Verona. The complex also includes San Giovanni in Fonte, Sant’Elena, and the canons’ cloister.

An octagonal baptismal font carved from one marble block stands at the centre of the baptistery. The unfinished bell tower contains nine bells, traces of fourteenth-century frescoes, and columns with decorated capitals. The Chapter Library preserves Catullus’s surviving collection, Cicero’s rediscovered letters, and the Verona Palimpsest.
