Batteria di scarpa stands beside Verona’s magistral walls, on the left bank of the Adige, between two historic rondelle. Its circular form joins masonry, earthworks, and a sloping tuff-stone facing. Next to it, Scaliger tower eleven rises with brickwork unlike the other towers in the surrounding wall.

The medieval curtain began under Cangrande della Scala between 1321 and 1324, with a moat cut into tuff rock. In 1840, Franz von Scholl designed this artillery fortification for the Austrian defensive system. Annular casemates held fortress guns, while a right-hand infantry sally port connected by a straight ramp to the inner ring road. Venetian rondelle forms meet Scaliger walls here, showing how Verona adapted older defenses to nineteenth-century military engineering.

Restoration brought the structure into the Parco delle Mura’s cultural life, with a documentation centre and library inside. Guided visits, educational activities, meetings, and cultural events explore Verona’s bastions, towers, powder magazines, and tunnels. One detail stays especially vivid: tower eleven’s entire masonry surface is built from brick.
