Batteria di controscarpa XXII stands beyond Verona’s main moat, facing the sixteenth-century curtain wall. It forms a single-level casemated caponier beyond the main moat. From here, the curtain wall runs between Rondella di Santa Toscana and Scaliger tower fourteen. Thick walls protected firing positions along the moat.

Verona’s defensive line brings medieval, Venetian, and nineteenth-century construction together around the moat. The first curtain wall dates from 1321 to 1324. Venice added an earth-filled curtain wall around 1520, linking older masonry near Scaliger tower fourteen. The Imperial Royal Office built this battery in 1839.

Its artillery supported counterattacks from Batteria di scarpa XXI and the main sortie gate. That gate served infantry, cavalry, and horse-drawn artillery. Marc René de Montalembert’s eighteenth-century polygonal model shaped this smaller casemated form. Its protected firing positions faced along the moat.
