Piazza San Marco forms Venice’s principal public square, framed by the Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and historic Procuratie buildings. The square includes the Piazzetta beside the lagoon.

St Mark’s Basilica faces the space with marble decoration, broad arches, and bronze horses above its entrance. The Campanile rises prominently near the square’s centre. Three tall flagpoles stand before the basilica. The square has served Venice as a social, religious, and political centre across its long history.
