Ex Chiesa di Santa Chiara stands on Murano, Venice, as a former Catholic church and monastery shaped by religious and industrial life. Its earliest documented settlement dates to around 1225, when Augustinian monks occupied the Monastery of Saint Nicholas of the Tower. Benedictine nuns later arrived, followed by Franciscan nuns from the Order of Santa Chiara. Frescoed ceilings with mythological and musical themes still preserve traces of its religious past.

Napoleonic decrees ended the complex’s religious use in 1810, opening the way for industrial transformation. In 1826, Fratelli Marietti established a glassworks producing wine bottles, window panes, mirror glass, and glass bells. French workers gave the factory its nickname, “Vetreria dei francesi,” while later alterations opened the cloister and absorbed parts of the church and bell tower. A conservation project launched in 2012 restored the former church and returned it to public use in July 2017.

Today, live demonstrations reveal Murano glassmaking inside a space also known as the Glass Cathedral. A showroom displays glass artworks, and a bar occupies part of the visitor experience. Remains of a Mocenigo family villa add another Venetian layer. The nearby church of San Pietro Martire preserves some relocated fragments of the old cloister.
