Chiesa di Santa Maria Formosa stands in Venice as a church shaped by Renaissance design, Baroque additions, and older religious history. The present church dates from 1492, when Mauro Codussi designed its Renaissance structure.

The site recalls a seventh-century church and a tradition linking its foundation with San Magno, bishop of Oderzo. The name Formosa refers to a legend about the Virgin. Its Latin-cross plan contains a central nave, two aisles, and vaults meeting beneath the dome. Two façades face the canal and the square. The canal-facing Renaissance façade dates from 1542, while the Baroque façade facing the square was completed in 1604. An earthquake caused the original dome to collapse in 1688.

Inside, Palma the Elder’s Saint Barbara polyptych shares the church with works by Bartolomeo Vivarini, Tiepolo, and Leandro Bassano. The Conception Chapel contains Vivarini’s 1473 Madonna of Misericordia triptych. The Oratory presents Tiepolo’s Madonna with Child and Saint Dominic, while Bassano’s Last Supper adds another Venetian painting. A Byzantine icon stands near the main door. The campanile completes the church’s presence in the Venetian skyline. As a landmark of architecture, Santa Maria Formosa brings together sacred art, changing styles, and Venice’s layered history.
