The Chiesa di San Trovaso stands in Venice as a church dedicated to Saints Gervasius and Protasius. Venetians shortened their names into the familiar title San Trovaso. An earlier church stood here by 1028, while the present building followed a collapse in 1583. Construction of the present church began in 1584 after the earlier building collapsed. The architect remains uncertain, though Francesco Smeraldi, a pupil of Palladio, is frequently proposed. The church received its consecration in 1637. Two nearly matching façades face the campo and Rio di San Trovaso, linking entrances on land and water. Each façade has a gabled profile, Corinthian pilasters, neoclassical portals, and two semicircular windows. Inside, a Latin-cross plan frames chapels and altars containing paintings by Domenico and Jacopo Tintoretto. Michele Giambono’s Saint Chrysogonus on Horseback adds an earlier Venetian work to the interior. The Chapel of the Squeraroli is dedicated to Venice’s traditional boat builders. The organ by Gaetano Callido dates from 1765. Paintings by Palma il Giovane, Gaspare Diziani, Alvise del Friso, and Andrea Michieli expand the church’s artistic record. The Chapel of the Most Holy Sacrament contains Tintoretto’s Last Supper and a copy of Christ Washing the Feet of the Disciples. Together, these façades, chapels, paintings, and music connect San Trovaso with Venice’s architectural traditions.
