The Chiesa del Redentore is a Roman Catholic church on Venice’s Giudecca island, beside the Canale della Giudecca. Andrea Palladio designed the building in the Italian Renaissance. It became a votive offering after Venice survived a devastating plague outbreak. The white church rises above a broad stone plinth. Its façade recalls Rome’s Pantheon, while a dome carries a statue of the Redeemer above the building. White stucco and grey stone shape the interior. A continuous Corinthian order runs around its long nave and domed crossing. Il Redentore contains works by Paolo Veronese, Tintoretto’s workshop, the Bassano family, and other Venetian artists. The sacristy preserves wax heads representing Franciscan friars. An attached monastery houses a small community of Capuchin friars beside the church. The Festa del Redentore connects this architecture with Venetian processions, fireworks, and a pontoon bridge across the Giudecca. Palladian design, religious art, and civic tradition meet in this Venetian landmark.
