Cartoixa de Valldemossa rises in Spain as a royal palace transformed into a Carthusian monastery. King Sancho’s residence began under Jaume II in the early fourteenth century and passed to Carthusian monks in 1399. Medieval, Renaissance and eighteenth-century layers now stand together across its stone rooms, cloisters and church.

The old cloister opens onto a cross-shaped garden, where myrtle borders narrow paths through smooth pebble beds. The present church carries neoclassical forms, eighteenth-century frescoes and stucco beside older structures. Nearby, a reconstructed monastic pharmacy displays jars, Majorcan glass, mortars and pestles from the same period. Two towers recall a sixteenth-century pirate raid, while the community’s expulsion in 1835 marks a later break in its history.

One small cell keeps the clearest artistic trace: Frédéric Chopin and George Sand stayed there during the winter of 1838 to 1839. Chopin completed preludes and worked on major compositions inside these walls, while his Pleyel piano and documents remain on display.
