Zittende figuur stands along the Maliebaan in Utrecht, among trees and elegant houses on this historic avenue. The bronze sculpture presents a seated female figure through smooth, rounded volumes rather than realistic detail.

Willy Blees created the work in 1981, first modeling it in plaster before casting the final form in bronze. It became one of the first four sculptures installed for the Beeldenroute Maliebaan, a project that brought works by female artists into Utrecht’s public spaces. Blees, who lived from 1931 to 1988, moved from animal sculpture towards abstracted female figures, with Henry Moore’s organic forms among her influences.

A small plaque on the base carries the artist’s name and the year 1981. The sculpture’s earlier name, Zittende Vrouwetorso, changed to avoid confusion with another Blees work in Park Vechtzoom.
