Kazerne A is a bombproof military barracks built between 1869 and 1870 as part of Fort Voordorp near Utrecht. It forms part of the fort’s wider defensive works. Eleven sections shape its symmetrical façade, where brick pilasters, segmental arches, doors, and windows establish a measured rhythm. The central section has double doors beneath a gable stone dated 1869. Earth covers the roof and short sides, reflecting protection against artillery fire in nineteenth-century military construction. The interior contains several rectangular rooms with brick barrel vaults. From west to east, the original arrangement included a kitchen, telegraph room, officers’ quarters, and sick bay. Later changes added a filling station and double coach house. A passage leads to a cast-iron staircase in the two-storey extension, whose vaulted rooms open towards the rounded southeast bastion. Kazerne A is recognised as a national monument for cultural and historical value. Its layout shows how a garrison combined cooking, communication, accommodation, medical care, storage, and defence within one structure. Fort Voordorp connects the barracks with Utrecht’s broader military landscape.
