Kasteel Oudaen stands beside Utrecht’s Oudegracht as a fortified medieval house, often called a city castle, in the Netherlands. Research dates its construction to shortly after 1276. Its three-storey main house has two cellars, a gabled roof at right angles to the street, and a stair tower. The roof structure dates from 1894 and carries slate tiles. Original beams survive above the ground and first floors, while the second-floor beams were replaced. The Zoudenbalch family first held the house as its Utrecht residence. In 1395, the Van Oudaen family acquired it, and their name became attached to the building. Cannonballs set into the walls recall fighting near Vredenburg. After restoration in 1986, Kasteel Oudaen became a hospitality venue with a restaurant, grand café, brewery, salon, and event rooms. The cellar brewery names beers after former resident families. Wheelchair access adds a practical detail for visitors in this historic setting along Utrecht’s canal.
