Theater Ulm is a municipal theatre in Ulm, Germany, with documented performances reaching back to the early sixteenth century. Founded in 1641, it holds the distinction of Germany’s oldest municipal theatre. The original building by Joseph Furttenbach introduced a curtain and orchestra pit to its theatre design. Its history includes nineteenth-century alterations and a major expansion in 1923. Allied bombing during the Second World War nearly destroyed the theatre, sending postwar performances temporarily to the Wagnerschule gymnasium. The current building opened on 3 October 1969. Architect Fritz Schäfer designed the modern structure, built between 1966 and 1969 at Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz. Herbert von Karajan held his first engagement there between 1929 and 1934. The theatre operates separate ensembles for opera, operetta, acting and ballet within Ulm’s cultural landscape. Its artistic programme spans opera, operetta, acting and ballet. The venue is marked as wheelchair accessible in its properties. The structure reflects Fritz Schäfer’s modern design in postwar Ulm.
