Steinhaus in Ulm, Germany, is a Romanesque building and one of the city's oldest surviving structures. Notary Marquard built it in the early thirteenth century. The building belonged to a larger complex with Nikolauskapelle, in an area called Grünen Hof linked to the Pfalz on Weinhof. Salem and Reichenau monasteries later held the complex. Nikolauskapelle changed across the centuries, losing its Romanesque apse and gaining a new choir in the late fourteenth century. Ochsenhausen monastery later made the surroundings a monastic courtyard. The chapel became secular during the Reformation and later served non-religious purposes after its religious use ended. Damage from the Second World War marked another chapter in its history. Restoration followed, and archaeological investigations later clarified the complex’s links with the Staufer period and late Middle Ages. Europa Nostra recognized the restoration work with an award. Steinhaus remains a rare Romanesque residential building, while Nikolauskapelle ranks among Ulm’s oldest surviving sacred structures. Together, they show Romanesque architecture in southern Germany.
