St. Michael zu den Wengen, also called Wengenkirche, stands as a Roman Catholic parish church in Ulm’s historic centre. Its origins reach back to Wengen Monastery. The church began within an Augustinian Canons’ convent and later served Catholics after Ulm’s Reformation. Its architecture records several major transformations across the church’s long history. Originally, the building formed a three-nave hall church with a vaulted choir, reflecting its early ecclesiastical design. Baroque wall pillars later changed the church interior. Rococo stucco and frescoes by Franz Martin Kuen added another layer of visual detail to the church. World War II destroyed much of the building, and post-war reconstruction gave it a modern appearance. The church became known locally as Werkhalle Gottes. Stained-glass windows by Hermann Geyer belong to a later redesign, while concerts draw on the church’s strong acoustics. The wheelchair-accessible church also remains a place of worship. Its history, art, music, and reconstructed spaces connect Ulm’s past with the church’s parish role.
