Obere Gaisenbergbastion, also known as Werk XIX, forms part of the Bundesfestung Ulm in Germany. Construction took place between 1843 and 1858. Hauptmann Vogt from Saxony directed the work. The bastion defended the northeastern flank of Michelsberg, a hill in Ulm. Its closed design combines a three-sided wall, a dry moat and a protective glacis. A rectangular reduit occupies the rear, or kehle. The reduit served as a final defensive position and shelter for the garrison. A bonnet casemate stands within the salient. Secondary flanks strengthen the bastion’s shoulders.

The left flank now provides a public path along the wall and rondengang, a covered walkway. Eythstraße removed the right side of the structure in 1903. The same work filled the right section of the moat. Restoration repaired the left secondary flank in 2002. The reduit now houses a publishing company. Courtine XVIII lies to the west, while Courtine XX stands southeast of the bastion. Preserved walls and defensive features show nineteenth-century military architecture within Ulm’s modern landscape. Vegetation removal helps protect the earth-covered vaults, drainage systems and masonry.
