Donaustufen lies along the Danube in Ulm, with broad steps or terraces facing the water and the city. From Baden-Württemberg, you look directly across the river into Bavaria. The terraces give you a place to sit, watch the river, and see Neu-Ulm on the opposite bank.

The Danube forms the natural boundary between Ulm and Neu-Ulm while also linking their civic and cultural life. Neu-Ulm emerged after 1810, when the eastern bank became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria during territorial reorganisation. Ulm, once a Free Imperial City, later belonged to Württemberg, leaving the river between two federal states and administrations.
