Die Einsteins is a museum in central Ulm, housed in the historic Engländer, once the home and business of Albert Einstein’s grandmother. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm in 1879, and the building once held the family bedding factory Israel & Levi. Around 300 square metres trace the family’s history and Jewish life in Ulm through physical displays, digital media and personal stories.

Seven themed chapters combine an analogue route with films, graphic novels and a digital collection wall. The exhibition begins with a cabinet of wonders presenting Einstein as a pop icon, followed by a four-metre-wide family tree. Personal accounts include Salomon Moos, Heinz Frenkel and Lina Einstein, while documents show how Nazi persecution shaped the family’s fate. Letters, police certificates and an affidavit from Albert Einstein reveal both attempts to escape and the tragedies that followed.

A distinctive window into the past lets you pull out panels and discover letters Einstein addressed to Ulm and private individuals. Seven digital graphic novels add different perspectives on family members, while videos by Tobi Krell, known as Checker Tobi, help younger visitors follow the stories.
