3 Die Bürger von Ulm is a stainless-steel sculpture by Erwin Reiter at the University of Ulm in Germany. Created in 1990, it stands along the university’s art path among more than seventy artworks, from paintings to large sculptures.

Reiter formed this work from leftover metal sheets, a method he called “waste sculptures”. The cut-out remnants become the visible forms, turning negative space into the subject of the sculpture. As light and shadow shift across the steel, your eye can read each shape as either positive or negative.

The material carries the designation CR NI Werkstoff Nr 4301, identifying stainless steel. Wheelchair access makes the university setting easier to approach, while the unusual use of discarded metal keeps perception at the centre of the experience.
